This is by far the rarest beach ball I have and comes with a very interesting story...
This was purchased in 2002 from a college student who lived in Salt lake City and attended the closing ceremonies for the 2002 Winter Olympics that were held there. Everyone coming into the stadium that day was told that they could `not` take anything from the ceremony back out with them...hmm. Well...at the very end they released hundreds of inflatable white snowballs (beach balls) both big and small, from high above and behind the crowd. They were bounced all around and being batted back and forth but eventualy worked there way down onto the ice. As time went on they all ended up on the ice where the athletes were. A few made there way back up into the crowds but by then most were covered with the flourescent paint that was sprayed all over the ice and were quite messy and ugly. This particular guy had a girlfriend that wanted one of the beach balls really bad but everytime she got her hands on one it got batted out of her frail grasp. She became frustrated but her boyfriend came to the rescue and grabbed ahold of a big one. He then quickly pulled the plug, deflated it, folded it up neatly and stuffed it in his coat to conceal it as best he could. They left the stadium after everthing was wrapped up, sneaking it out without it being noticed or discovered although he said he looked pretty funny with that giant lump in his coat! Anyway, the rest of the beach balls ended up on the ice and were covered in sloppy, wet paint so guess what? They were all slashed, deflated and dumped in the trash as garbage...what a waste! In the end...she had it a few days, didn`t know what to do with it and needed money so her boyfriend put it on ebay, I found it and won it. I`ve never seen another one anywhere since making this is a very rare, special and unique piece of Olympic history. It has been cleaned up and looks great! It was inflated and inspected for any damage and I found one very small pinhole (possibly from a ring) in the end cap that has been nicely repaired with clear vinyl and glue. The round patch (barely visible in one picture) is smaller than a dime and blends in quite well. The ball was re-inflated and left for a couple days and held air fine. There are a couple of small, barely noticeable places with some of the green flourescent paint but that`s what helps show that it`s authentic. I have no certificate of authenticity but I assure you it is one of the big beach balls bouncing around the stadium that last night!
